About CutNest

CutNest works out how to cut your parts from stock sheets, bars and tubes with the least waste, and tells you exactly what to order. It is made by a fabricator in Newcastle upon Tyne who orders sheet material for a living.

What it does

You enter the stock you buy (sheet sizes, or bar and tube lengths) and the parts you need. CutNest nests the rectangular parts on the sheets, or cuts the lengths from the bars, allowing for your saw or laser kerf. It tells you how many sheets or lengths to order and what they cost, draws every sheet, and says when it has proved that no layout could use fewer.

From there you can print cut sheets for the workshop, labels for every part, a DXF for the laser or router, or a quote for your customer priced from the layout.

It handles sheet metal and plate, plywood, MDF and other boards, acrylic and sign materials, timber lengths, and bar, tube and extrusion. It works in millimetres or inches and in 19 currencies.

Why it was made

A job came in for 316 brushed stainless. The usual sum said 4 sheets; nested properly, the parts fitted on 3. That one sheet was worth £225. Most cut list software is either too simple to trust or priced and built for a large factory, so CutNest was made for the shops in between: fabricators, joiners, sign makers and anyone who cuts parts from stock.
