MS sheet cutting calculator

Mild steel is sold by the kilo and cut by the sheet. Work out how many sheets your parts need, what each sheet weighs, and what the job costs in rupees.

Price per sheet from price per kg

A 2500×1250mm sheet of 2mm MS weighs 49.1 kg.

The sheet size comes from the calculator below. ₹65 a kg is only an example: use your dealer’s rate for the grade and thickness you buy.

How many sheets for the job?

An example job of plates, brackets and gussets is loaded, with a 3mm gap for gas or plasma cutting. Put in your own parts.

MS sheet weight

Weight = length (m) × width (m) × thickness (mm) × 7.85. A 2500×1250 sheet of 2mm: 2.5 × 1.25 × 2 × 7.85 = 49.1 kg.

Getting more parts from a sheet

Leave the right gap

Shearing leaves no gap, but gas cutting, plasma and laser each burn a different width. The kerf guide has typical figures.

Compare sheet sizes

Tap the sizes in the calculator: 2500×1250 and 8×4 can need a different number of sheets for the same parts.

Keep the offcuts

The calculator shows which strips are left over. Note them for gussets and small brackets on the next job.

Quote from the layout

The CutNest app prices the job for your customer from the sheets, the cutting time and your margin, in rupees.

Questions

Length in metres × width in metres × thickness in mm × 7.85 gives the weight in kg. A 2500×1250mm sheet of 2mm weighs about 49.1 kg; of 5mm, about 122.7 kg.
2500×1250mm (about 8.2×4.1 ft) is common, along with 8×4 ft (2440×1220mm). Plates are also sold in longer sizes. Ask your dealer which sizes they stock in your thickness.
Put your parts in the calculator above with your sheet size and cutting gap. It nests them and gives the real count, which is often more than total area divided by sheet area.
