Sheet metal gauge chart

Gauge numbers mean different thicknesses in different systems: 16 gauge is 1.63mm in the UK (SWG) but 1.52mm for US steel and 1.29mm for aluminium. Here are all five side by side, in millimetres, with the weight of each steel gauge.

Gauge to millimetres

Thickness in mm. The higher the gauge, the thinner the sheet. Merchants usually sell by the nearest round size: UK 16 gauge is sold as 1.6mm, 18 gauge as 1.2mm, so order in millimetres when you can.

UK SWG: Imperial Standard Wire Gauge (BS 3737). US steel: Manufacturers’ Standard Gauge, defined by weight (thickness = lb per sq ft ÷ 41.82); galvanised adds the zinc coating. US stainless: US Standard Gauge (1893). Aluminium: Brown & Sharpe (American Wire Gauge). Sheet is rolled to a tolerance, so a real sheet can be a few hundredths of a millimetre either side.

Weight of steel sheet by gauge

Mild steel at 7,850kg/m³: 7.85kg per square metre for every millimetre of thickness. US steel gauges are defined by weight, so their pounds per square foot are exact.

Stainless is about 1% heavier than mild steel, aluminium about a third of the weight. For any size, shape or metal, use the metal weight calculator.

Ordering sheet for a job?

How many sheets

The sheet nesting calculator lays your parts out on the sheet you buy and gives the real count. Adding up the areas was a sheet short on more than 1 job in 5.

Bending it?

The bend allowance calculator gives the flat length from the thickness, inside radius and K-factor.

CutNest turns the layout into a customer quote: material, cutting time from the actual layout, handling and VAT. How to price a sheet metal job.

Questions

Depends on the system: 1.63mm UK SWG (sold as 1.6mm), 1.52mm US steel, 1.59mm US stainless, 1.29mm aluminium (Brown & Sharpe).
1.22mm UK SWG (sold as 1.2mm), 1.21mm US steel, 1.27mm US stainless and 1.02mm aluminium.
3.25mm UK SWG, 3.42mm US steel, 3.57mm US stainless and 2.59mm aluminium.
Gauges began as wire-drawing steps and as weights of iron sheet, and each country and metal settled on its own. The UK standardised SWG in 1883; US sheet steel is defined by weight per square foot. Thickness in millimetres avoids the confusion.
A 2500×1250mm sheet of UK 16 gauge (1.63mm) mild steel weighs about 39.9kg; it is 12.76kg per square metre.
