Steel section weights per metre

Box section, round tube, angle, flat and round bar in common sizes: kilograms per metre and per 6m length, for lifting, delivery and pricing by weight. Every figure is worked out from the section, and the method is below.

Square hollow section (SHS)

Size in mm. “Rounded corners” uses the corner radii of EN 10219-2 for cold-formed sections, which is what most suppliers’ tables show; “square corners” is the simple sum, a little heavier.

How the weights are worked out

Weight per metre is the area of the cross-section times the density: mild steel is 7,850kg/m³, which is 0.00785kg per metre for every square millimetre of section.

  • Box section: 2 × wall × (width + height) − 4 × wall². For rounded corners, each corner then loses (4 − π) ÷ 4 × (outer radius² − inner radius²), with the outer radius 2 × wall up to 6mm wall, 2.5 × wall up to 10mm and 3 × wall above (EN 10219-2).
  • Round tube: π × wall × (outside diameter − wall).
  • Angle: thickness × (2 × leg − thickness). Flat: width × thickness. Round bar: π × diameter² ÷ 4.

Stainless is about 1% heavier, aluminium about a third of the weight. Hot-finished sections have tighter corners than cold-formed and weigh slightly more; for an exact figure on a big order, use the mill’s table. For any other size, shape or metal, use the metal weight calculator.

Cutting it to length?

The fewest bars

The cut length calculator works out how many 6m or 7.5m lengths your cut list needs, with a saw list for every bar.

Questions

About 3.30kg per metre with the rounded corners of cold-formed section (EN 10219), or 3.49kg by the square-corner sum; a 6m length is about 19.8kg.
About 25.5kg (4.25kg per metre) for cold-formed section with rounded corners.
Round tube: π × wall × (outside diameter − wall) in mm, times 0.00785, gives kg per metre. 48.3×3.2 scaffold-size tube is about 3.56kg per metre.
Rolled sections have rounded corners and are made to a thickness tolerance, and hot-finished section has tighter corners than cold-formed. Expect a few per cent either way; use the mill’s figure when it matters.
