Wardrobe cutting list

A 2-door wardrobe 1200mm wide and 2100mm high, with a loft above, in 18mm board. Every panel, how each size is worked out, and how many 8×4 sheets it really takes.

The wardrobe

The wardrobe is 1200mm wide, 2100mm high and 600mm deep (560mm carcass plus shutters), with a partition down the middle: shelves on the left, a hanging rod and one shelf on the right. A 600mm loft sits on top. Everything is 18mm board.

Carcass panels on 8×4 sheets

The carcass and loft panels are loaded, in 18mm board at an example ₹3,200 a sheet. Change them to your design.

Shutters, with the grain

Entered height first, along the 8 ft length of the board, and kept from turning so the grain runs up each shutter.

Why the area sum gets it wrong

The carcass panels add up to 2.91 sheets of 8×4, so dividing by area says 3 sheets. The calculator needs 4. The two 2100mm sides and the 2064mm partition each take most of a board’s length, and the strip left beside them is too short for the 1164mm tops. Order 3 and the job stops at the last panel.

Two ways to save a sheet: buy 10×4 if your dealer stocks it, or cut the loft from the offcuts of the next job. Try the sizes in the calculator before you order.

Also on the list

  • Back: 6mm or 8mm board, or leave it open against a finished wall.
  • Laminate and edge band tape for the shutters and the visible carcass edges.
  • Hardware: three or four hinges per 2100mm shutter, a hanging rod and brackets, handles, and locks if wanted.
  • Sliding wardrobe? Shutters are wider and overlap, and the track takes depth: work the shutter sizes from the sliding system you use.

Questions

A common size is 7 ft (about 2100mm) high and 2 ft (600mm) deep, with each shutter around 450 to 600mm wide. A loft above adds storage up to the ceiling.
For the 4 ft wardrobe with a loft on this page, 4 sheets of 18mm 8×4 for the carcass and 2 for the shutters. The area sum says 3 for the carcass, which is a sheet short.
