Modular kitchen cutting list

Panel sizes for a 10 ft run of base units in 18mm board, how each size is worked out, and how many 8×4 sheets the job takes. Change any size and the calculator works it out again, in rupees.

The kitchen

A straight 10 ft run (3000mm) of five base units: 600, 600, 900, 450 and 450mm wide. Each carcass is 720mm high, standing on legs, and 560mm deep, in 18mm board. The 900 unit has two shutters; the others have one each.

PartSize (mm)QtyHow it’s worked out
Side720 × 56010Two per unit: carcass height × depth
Bottom564 / 864 / 414 × 5602 / 1 / 2Unit width minus two sides (600 − 36)
Stretcher564 / 864 / 414 × 1004 / 2 / 4Front and back top stretchers, same width as the bottom
Shelf564 / 864 / 414 × 5202 / 1 / 2Bottom width, 40mm shallower so it clears the shutter
Shutter716 × 596 and 716 × 4462 and 4Carcass size less 2 to 4mm for gaps; the 900 unit takes two 446 shutters

Carcass panels on 8×4 sheets

The carcass panels for the five units are loaded, in 18mm board at an example price of ₹3,200 a sheet. Put in your own sizes and your dealer’s price.

Shutters, with the grain

Shutters are entered height first, along the 8 ft length of the sheet, and can’t turn, so the laminate or veneer grain runs up every shutter.

What the calculator shows

The carcasses for this kitchen need 3 sheets of 8×4, and the six shutters fit on 1 sheet, even with the grain kept running up each shutter. Keep the offcuts: the 900 and 450 bottoms leave strips that make good drawer parts and fillers.

Before you buy, compare 8×4 with 7×4 or 6×4 boards by tapping the sizes above: for some units a shorter board wastes less. And don’t order by total area divided by sheet area; on jobs with long panels that sum is often a sheet short (see the wardrobe cutting list for an example).

Also on the list

  • Backs: 6mm or 8mm board, the unit width and height less the groove or rebate you use.
  • Laminate: one sheet of laminate for each face you cover. The shutter layout above is also your laminate layout.
  • Edge band tape: add up the visible edges of every shutter and carcass front, plus 10% for trimming.
  • Hardware: hinges (two per shutter up to about 900mm high), legs, skirting, channels for drawers, and handles.
  • Wall units: add them as more parts. A 720mm high wall unit 300 to 350mm deep is worked out the same way.

Questions

Common carcass sizes are 720mm high and 560mm deep, in widths of 300, 450, 600, 750 and 900mm. With legs and a 20mm granite or quartz top the counter usually finishes at about 850 to 900mm. Check against your client and the appliances.
For the 10 ft run of base units on this page, 3 sheets of 18mm 8×4 for the carcasses and 1 for the shutters. Wall units, tall units and backs add more. Put your own units into the calculator for your job.
Many carpenters use waterproof (BWP or BWR) plywood under the sink and near water, and MR grade plywood, HDHMR or MDF elsewhere and for shutters. The cutting list is the same whichever board you choose; only the thickness changes the sizes.
Yes. Open the job in the CutNest app to print a cut sheet for every board and a label for every part, so sides, bottoms and shelves don’t get mixed up.
