How the sizes are worked out

  • Each shelf frame is a front and back rail the full width, 48", with side rails between them: 24 − 1 1/2 − 1 1/2 = 21".
  • The uprights run full height: 72".
  • Shelves are 23 7/8" deep, not 24". Four 24" strips need 96" plus three saw cuts, more than a sheet has. At 23 7/8", all four come from one sheet.
  • Buy 10 ft 2×4s if you can: the frame takes eight of them instead of twelve 8 ft boards, because a 10 ft board gives an upright and a side rail, or two rails and a side rail, with little waste. Tap 10 ft in the calculator to see.

You’ll also need

  • 2 1/2" and 3" construction screws
  • Optional: anchor the top to the wall studs

Sizes assume 3/4" plywood and lumber at its actual size (a 2×4 is 1 1/2 × 3 1/2"). Measure your material before cutting: plywood is often a little under 3/4".
