How the sizes are worked out
- The long sides are the full 96".
- The ends fit between them: 48 − 1 1/2 − 1 1/2 = 45".
- With 12 ft boards, each one gives a long side and an end (96 + 45 plus the cut), so four 12 ft boards do the whole bed. With 8 ft boards it takes six: four for the long sides and two for the ends. Tap 8 ft in the calculator to see.
You’ll also need
- Four 2×4 or 4×4 corner posts, 11" long
- Exterior screws
- Use lumber rated for ground contact if the bed sits on soil
Sizes assume 3/4" plywood and lumber at its actual size (a 2×4 is 1 1/2 × 3 1/2"). Measure your material before cutting: plywood is often a little under 3/4".
