How the sizes are worked out

  • Legs: 36 − 3/4 for the top = 35 1/4".
  • The legs stand with their 3 1/2" face along the length, so the long rails fit between them: 60 − 3 1/2 − 3 1/2 = 53".
  • Across the depth the legs are 1 1/2", so the short rails are 24 − 1 1/2 − 1 1/2 = 21".
  • The top is 24 × 60"; the shelf sits on the lower rails between the legs, 53" long.
  • Make the shelf 23 7/8" deep, not 24": then it and the top sit side by side on one sheet (24 + 23 7/8 + the saw cut = 48"). At 24" the pair needs two sheets.

You’ll also need

  • 3" construction screws, or bolts for the legs
  • Wood glue
  • Optional: a second layer on the top, or hardboard to wear out instead of the plywood

Sizes assume 3/4" plywood and lumber at its actual size (a 2×4 is 1 1/2 × 3 1/2"). Measure your material before cutting: plywood is often a little under 3/4".
