How the sizes are worked out
- The front and back are the full 36 × 20".
- The sides fit between them: 18 − 3/4 − 3/4 = 16 1/2".
- The bottom fits inside all four: 36 − 1 1/2 = 34 1/2" by 16 1/2".
- The lid overhangs 1/2" all round: 37 × 19".
You’ll also need
- A lid support made for toy boxes, so the lid stays open and can’t slam
- A continuous (piano) hinge
- Glue, screws and a child-safe finish
Sizes assume 3/4" plywood and lumber at its actual size (a 2×4 is 1 1/2 × 3 1/2"). Measure your material before cutting: plywood is often a little under 3/4".
